The 43rd annual international strongman competition returns in May, after taking place in Bradenton for the first time last year.

An event that brought an international assortment of competitors and spectators to Manatee County last year has announced its return.

World’s Strongest Man will revisit the Bradenton area May 20 for its 43rd annual event, featuring 25 athletes from around the globe competing in feats of strength such as lifting monster trucks and tossing kettle bells over two days of qualifiers and a two-day final.

“We are honored and excited to welcome World’s Strongest Man back to the Bradenton area in 2020,” said Elliott Falcione, Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau’s executive director, in a statement. “This year’s event is gearing up to be even bigger and better than last year, and we look forward to hosting the athletes, coaches and fans, and showcasing not only our world-class sporting facilities but also our entire destination to a worldwide audience.”

Last year’s event featured competitors including Icelandic 2018 champion Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, also known for his role as Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane on HBO series “Game of Thrones” and four-time American champion Brian Shaw. Martins Licis was crowned champion at last year’s event in Bradenton, which was later broadcast on CBS and CBS Sports.

This year’s event will be held at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, with the competitors not yet announced. Last year’s event took place in June at various Manatee County locales including downtown Bradenton’s Old Main Street and Coquina and Manatee Public beaches, marking the first time the competition was held in Florida.
