Two men from Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, are expected to appear in court on Monday after their arrest during the week.

On Thursday, at around 08:00, Mitchells Plain Crime Prevention Unit officers were on a routine patrol when they noticed a suspicious-looking man walking in Cathedral Street in Tafelsig.

When he spotted the police officers, he tried to run away, said police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana.

“The police apprehended a 24-year-old man. Upon searching him, they found tik, heroin and Mandrax worth a substantial amount in his possession,” she said.

The second arrest happened the next day when Mitchells Plain police were on patrol in Morgenster Road, Beacon Valley, on Friday. They spotted a group of suspicious-looking men they believed to be behind attacks on commuters.

“The police had received information that the suspects were targeting community members on their way to work. When the members approached them, they ran [away],” Rwexana said.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man, who they found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition.

Both men are expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges relating to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and the possession of drugs.
