Because I’m a glass half full person, I prefer to reflect on the positives of 2020, rather than the abject chaos that will haunt us for years. One such positive is the fact that being trapped indoors with nothing to do inspired me to revive my fitness prowess and get back to exercising – a habit that I’ve continued to pursue even after lockdown ended.
So for those of you who are also focusing on your health – I’m betting that that’s a lot of you, especially with New Year’s on the way and your resolutions no doubt being health-related – the Australian Institute of Fitness (AIF) has listed the top 10 fitness trends that they reckon will be major in 2021.
According to a survey of AIF’s leading industry experts and professionals, the numero uno trend for 2021 will be wearable technology, which is already a ‘yuge deal for many folks, but apparently it’s about to become even bigger.
“Wearable technology has come a long way in a relatively short space of time and, these days, everyone from young kids to grannies are wearing devices to monitor their steps, sleep, heart rate and more,” said AIF’s CEO, Steve Pettit.
“For some Australians, the personalised data and insights from wearables have a novelty element – but for many others, wearable data is increasingly being used as a valuable tool to shape and track fitness, health and wellness progress.”
“Apple and Garmin wearables will continue to flourish across all segments of the Australian fitness market in 2021 – from everyday fitness and leisure consumers, through to gym junkies and fitness professionals in areas of programming, training and recovery,” he added.
He went on to tease some incoming new prods that will be all the rage in the new year: “Also, keep an eye out for hearables with biosensors. Rumours have been circulating that next year’s Apple AirPods may include heart rate and blood oxygen sensors. If these do hit the market in 2021, expect big uptake from Australian fitness communities.”
