SPRINGFIELD — During the 29th Annual Downstate Illinois Occupational Safety & Health Day (DIOSH) on March 4 in Peoria, the Governor’s Award for Health and Safety will be presented to a person who has made significant contributions to occupational health and/or safety.
You can nominate someone – or yourself – for this prestigious award through January 31, 2020. The nomination form is available at www.dioshday.com. The Illinois Department of Labor is a cosponsor of DIOSH Day, which will be held at the Peoria Civic Center.
“Worker safety is a core mission of the Illinois Department of Labor, and we know health and safety is a priority for private and public employers. This is a great chance to give your health and safety advocates recognition for their important work. I urge you to consider nominating a worthy individual,” said IDOL director Michael Kleinik.

DIOSH Day is for employers, employees, and all others interested in safety and health. Experts in the field will present numerous sessions on the most current issues in safety and health today. The Illinois Department of Labor, other governmental agencies and private vendors also will provide information and materials in a large exhibition area.

1988: Burtschi is the first store in Illinois south of Springfield to offer Hummel figurines.
Central Illinois Public Service (CIPS)
1959: The Eastern Division of the CIPS is completing a move into the new building in Mattoon. The structure has 36 offices and 23,000 square feet of office space.
Consolidated Telemarketing Association (CTA)
1991: The CTA office is carpeted, air conditioned, well-lit and features work stations designed around employee needs. Telemarketers generated $435 billion in sales last year. For each customer who says yes, 99 say no.
Douglas Nursing Center
1977: Acquisition of the Douglas Nursing Center will complete another phase in Wesley Tower’s total care package.

E. Rudy Place
1992: A group of children wait in line to challenge the winner to a game of tether ball at the E. Rudy Street housing project.
General Electric Co.
1950: Proof that flash photography has become a national hobby is the Mattoon plant of the General Electric Co. which manufactures flash bulbs almost exclusively. A few incandescent or regular light bulbs in larger wattages are made here also.
Mattoon Area Educational Extension Center
1965: The school is housed in the former Humble Oil Co. building on Route 45 on the south side of Mattoon.
