How to keep your fitness resolutions during the new year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — It’s the new year, which means lots of people are ready to start their new year’s resolutions. You can expect to see some new faces at the gym, since health and fitness resolutions are common.

David Elsen, the Executive Director of the YMCA of Central Kentucky, has some tips to help you make and keep your goals. He says one thing is to be realistic. Start slow and keep in mind that progress takes time, so setting long-term goals can help you throughout the year.

“A month is really not going to help that much, but six months or a year, you can be a new person,” said Elsen.

Also, finding things you enjoy doing makes it easier to stick to the plan. For example, if you don’t like running, doing a 5k may not be the best resolution to make.

” Everybody has different goals. Everybody is unique, so figure out what’s best for you, what you want to do and what you want to accomplish,” said Elsen.

Another tip is to use the buddy system. Working with a partner or a trainer can help you set goals and keep you motivated, so you’re less likely to fall off.
