What combines competition, a chance to get healthy and community spirit? The annual Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge.

Mayors of 11 different towns throughout Brevard County are inviting their constituents to participate in the challenge, which kicked off last weekend.

All you have to do is sign up online at Health First Mayor’s Fitness Challenge. You’ll automatically become a member of your community’s team. If you live in unincorporated Brevard or your community is not participating, you’re welcome to join a team that’s near your home or workplace.

How does it work? After you sign up, you’ll receive a survey every Friday. You’ll track how many minutes you’ve exercised. It’s the honor system, so don’t cheat. (Note: every community has the option to track minutes independently so follow whatever directions you’re given).

What counts as exercise? Walking, running, biking, swimming, participating in a sport. The list goes on.

But the really fun part: most municipalities are organizing community walks and activities. So not only do you get to exercise but you can work up a sweat with a community.

This Saturday, consider joining us for a Full Moon Walk at 5:15 p.m. at Manatee Sanctuary Park in Cape Canaveral.

The challenge runs through March 27. At the end, the team with the most minutes wins a trophy and bragging rights for the next year as the “Most Fit City 2020.”
