Family business time | Letters – Chico Enterprise-Record

Let’s not fool ourselves: Trump’s daily calendar of “executive time” is not just tweet storms and television fascination. There’s no way Trump turned over the day to day operation of the family business to Don Jr. and Eric as he promised; they’re not the sharpest knives in the drawer and Trump is a control freak. So it’s pretty obvious that “executive time” is really “Trump family business” time.

Working on international business deals that will benefit the Trump Organization is a violation of the Emolument Clause, Article 1, Section 9 of the U.S. Constitution, a federal crime. The word emolument traces back to the Latin word emolumentum, meaning “profit, gain”; money you receive for working.

One such violation is trademark applications. Trump’s business applied for the trademarks in Argentina in late December 2017. Shortly after the close of the trademark opposition period the United States reached a deal with Argentina to permanently eliminate tariffs on aluminum and steel. After the trademarks were approved Trump reinstated the tariffs.

This is not the first time that the Trump family’s trademarks ran up against American foreign policy: Since he has been President, at least 63 foreign trademarks have been granted to Trump businesses. In 2018 Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and White House official, was granted 34 trademarks in China: categories included toys, alcoholic beverages and voting machines.

This is criminal activity pure and simple, but don’t expect Attorney General Barr to come calling; he’s too busy doing Trump’s personal political bidding.
