Jan. 8-29: The New Venture Entrepreneurial Workshop series for start-up or new businesses will be presented by the Small Business Development Center at Butte College. The four-part series provides information for those starting a new business or already a small business owner. Topics include legal requirements, market and cost analysis, funding, business plans.

Jan. 10: Rapid Growth Using Facebook, Ad Manager and Google Adsense will be offered by the Butte College Small Business Development Center. Details: 9 to 11 a.m. at 202 Mira Loma, Oroville, Butte County Employment and Social Services. Cost: free. Must register to attend 895-9017 or www.buttecollegesbdc.com. Google and Facebook are the most reliable and insightful platforms producing the largest return on investment. Guests will learn about both platforms, their differences, when to use and how to scale quickly.

Jan. 14: A summary of significant labor and employment regulations coming in 2020 will be included in the Labor Law Update at The Training Place. Details: 9-11 a.m. at Butte College’s Training Place, 2480 Notre Dame Blvd. Room SC144. Cost: $85 or $75 for chamber members. Registration: thetrainingplace@butte.edu or 895-9015. Attorney Ann Wicks will present the overview on issues impacting independent contractors and the gig economy work force, new enforcement avenues for wage and hour issues, significant changes to arbitration clauses, employee privacy and more. Jan. 16: Reservations can be made for the 82nd annual Chico Chamber of Commerce dinner and business awards. Details: 6 p.m. at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Cost: $100. Reservations by Jan. 3. Jan. 23: Basic Sales and Use Tax Seminar will be offered by Small Business Development Center at Butte College and California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Gain an understanding of sales and use tax, district tax, taxable and nontaxable labor, as well as foreign and interstate taxability. Find out if you need a seller’s permit, and learn about resale certificates. Understand what exemptions and deductions are available, and the formula for selling items, along with recordkeeping and filing requirements, and online services.

Jan. 24, 31: “Start Your eCommerce Business in 2 Days — a Two-Week Series” will be offered by the Small Business Development Center at Butte College, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Butte College Small Business Development Center, 2480 Notre Dame Blvd. Chico. Cost: $50 in advance, $60 at the door. Must register: 895-9017 or www.buttecollegesbdc.com. Veronika Monell of JumpStartNOW will explain the power of eCommerce. Topics include business strategy, ideal customers, setting up the eCommerce store, managing the business, understanding best practices and building a marketing strategy.

Jan. 28: “Turn Your Hobby into a Business” will be offered by the Small Business Development Center at Butte College and Paradise Chamber of Commerce. Details: 9 to 11 a.m. at Paradise Chamber of Commerce, 6161 Clark Road. No. 1 Paradise. Cost: free but must register 895-9017 or www.buttecollegesbdc.com. A step-by-step process helps determine if your hobby can become a business. Brainstorm way to generate enough income to warrant the effort. Topics include, business planning, calculate profit, record keeping, financial statements and more.

Feb. 4-25: “Financial Management for Existing Businesses” will be offered by the Small Business Development Center at Butte College. Details: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the center, 2480 Notre Dame Blvd., Chico. Cost: free, sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank. Must register: 895-9017 or www.buttecollegesbdc.com. The series is designed to help owners manage their business financials. Topics include financial statements, cash flow cycle, financial ratios, troubleshooting, pricing and costs, forecasts and budgets.
