AVON LAKE, Ohio — It took just six months of dedicated renovation and remodeling for Big M Pizza to take over the space formerly occupied by Breakwall Food & Spirits in Avon Lake. Breakwall moved and expanded into a space in the Drug Mart plaza.
“After six months of hard work, tearing up and rebuilding,” said Mayor Greg Zilka, “we have this incredible facility and a new restaurant with unbelievable pizza. I got to taste some last week and I just loved it.”
The city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Big M on Monday (Dec. 30) in the plaza near the intersection of Lear Road and Electric Boulevard. The event heralded Avon Lake’s first new business opening of 2020.
“We have gotten a big response from the community about Big M Pizza,” said Avon Lake Economic Development Director Ted Esborn. “I’ve enjoyed hearing and reading the descriptions of their one-of-a-kind pizza. But more than that, there has been a warm welcome to the Big M team from the people of Avon Lake, especially neighborhoods around the north end of Lear Road.
“Big M is now an exciting piece of their unique, walkable area and it is exactly the type of small business investment the city focused on in its Comprehensive Land Use Plan adopted this fall,” he said.
Esborn also noted, “Big M is the perfect kind of small business for this friendly neighborhood that has been home to valued local businesses in Avon Lake for decades.”
Big M owners John Teel and Maureen Labrosse got their start in the pizza business in the Cleveland Flats.
“We started perfecting our pizza about three years ago at Mulberry’s,” said Labrosse, “and we wanted to see if it would hold up in this great neighborhood in Avon Lake. Big M is a family-friendly pizza bar/restaurant with hopes to have the best food around.
“Pizza for sure is our signature dish, but we also want to have a great burger and egg rolls. We also have a gluten-free crust we hope takes off,” she said.
“We chose Avon Lake for its great environment and we want to bring a unique touch,” Teel said.
They must be doing something right, because New Year’s Eve was a success, according to Labrosse.
“We had a good day,” she said. “It was a good dinner crowd. There were a lot of families, and everyone seemed very happy.”
Big M Pizza is located at 153 Lear Road in Avon Lake.
